Worth leaving tech megaculture for multimedia One-Point-Oh?
April 1, 2014 7:14 AM

My friend has this idea for a computer game but I'm not sure there's a market for it. It's like a virtual construction box where you can build anything you want with 3D bricks, sort of like Legos. Should I leave my job at a major software company to pursue its development? It'll run on IBM or Mac platforms with CD-ROM drives.

That's the sort of thing I'd talk to my dad about first.

Please explain 'Legos'. Thanks.

Well, frankly, it needs work before you make any big moves. It's great that it's in 3D because people love that. No one gives a shit about building, however. Maybe you can get some guns in there, plus a lot of military jargon and art assets. Maybe some level design inspired by the movie Aliens? Then, you might have something people want to play.

If you're approaching venture capitalists about this, just make sure to wash your face first.

Looking at your past questions, it looks like you've been working for that company for a while - it might be good to get out into startup culture. Escape building 7!

Are you fully vested? If not, maybe consider how long that will take, and whether it's worth waiting.

Also, you should keep a diary.

Honestly, this idea is so half baked it's like someone from the mid-nineties with no computer experience came up with it.
